Exhibition Review (Revision)

National Museum of Women in the Arts

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to travel to the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center so instead, I did some research and found an art center that is currently closed right now due to renovations but is offering online exhibitions. The National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) is the only major museum in the world solely dedicated to championing women through the arts.

On the website, you can find various exhibitions that showcase several different mediums of art and women artists. The exhibition that I chose to dive into is called Girlhood by Mary Ellen Mark. Her exhibition includes photographs of young women and girls that capture the essence of girlhood. She traveled all over from the streets of Seattle to India to capture each individual from 1950 up until 2015. Most of her photographs that I saw were in black and white specifically and they all are more so young girls up into teenage years and even young adults. This exhibit can be viewed online at any point in time at https://nmwa.org/whats-on/exhibitions/online/mary-ellen-mark-girlhood/

As you go through this exhibit you will first and foremost be directed to a page that is an overview of the artist and how long she has been a photographer and her subject matter. Then towards the bottom of the screen, there are two arrows to go forward and backward through twenty-one different photographs of hers. Skipping through the photographs some of them feature a small paragraph attached that explains the artist's reasoning behind her subject matter and her history as a photographer. This exhibit is laid out very well and user-friendly in order to show Mary Ellen Mark and to share a glimpse of her 50 years' worth of photography. I really have enjoyed this online experience and having the chance to go through other exhibitions and read about several other artists. I strongly recommend everyone take a look into this exhibit and spend some time exploring like I did. This museum is dedicated to presenting women in art because of gender imbalance and to give light to what women are capable of creating. I am unsure of when the renovations will be done to the building and when they will reopen, but I definitely encourage if anyone is ever in Washington D.C. to stop by and see what exhibits they have.

  1. Hello Emily!

It's interesting that the NMWA is the only (!) major museum in the world dedicated to championing women. It is surprising information for me, as I would assume there would be more! Thank you for bringing that up. That definitely makes me more interested in this particular museum.

For my review I also did an online exhibition, and I liked the experience. From now on I am definitely going to look at some other online exhibitions, and I will check out the exhibition that you wrote about, so thank you for including the link.

The exhibition must be special since it includes photos taken over a long period of time and in different places. I definitely am interested.

Do you remember any photos from this exhibition that you especially liked, or that stood out to you the most?

Good job and thanks for sharing!

  2. Hi Emily. I'm glad there are options for online exhibitions like this, because there are literally countless reasons why traditional in-person galleries are not accessible for some. So it's nice to see this an option too! This broad accessibility is especially exciting and important for a museum dedicated to highlighting women in art, because this means that all young girls with access to a computer also have access to these resources. Thank you for sharing!
